The 861 m high Kickelhahn is the local mountain of Ilmenau and with its 24 m high observation tower one of the landmarks of the city. It lies directly on the 20 km long Goethe hiking trail and at the same time forms its highest point. The hike on the Kickelhahner Weg is about 3.8 km long. Alternatively, you can park at the Herzogröderwiese hiking car park, from where it is only about 350m to walk.
“Above all peaks is peace …” Goethe wrote on the wall of this small refuge on September 6th 1780. From this the world-famous “Wanderers Nachtlied” (“Wanderer’s Nightsong“) was later created. Admission is free.

Day 2: Drive through the scenic Schwarzatal valley to Cursdorf (approx. 50km) to the valley station of the Oberweißbach mountain railway. The steepest funicular railway to transport normal-gauge railway cars overcomes a 25% gradient and a difference in altitude of 323 m on its 18-minute journey. Walk through the Fröbelwald at the mountain station and enjoy your lunch in the dining car in Lichtenhain. After the return journey to the valley station you continue to the brewery tour to Watzdorf (approx. 25km). “Watzdorfer” is the largest brewery in the region. During a brewery tour you will learn a lot about brewing then and now, of course with a tasting. Afterwards, you return your journey to Arnstadt (approx. 33km).
3rd day breakfast, check-out
The wildly romantic Schwarzatal has a lot to offer. High towering rocks, deep forests, picturesque rivers – an experience for the eye and soul. The Oberweißbacher Bergbahn was opened in 1923 and connects the valley with the villages of the plateau. During the 18-minute ride, this funicular overcomes a difference in altitude of 323 m and offers an unbelievable panoramic view of the Schwarzatal valley and the Thuringian Forest at an incline of 25%. In the summer months, when the weather is fine, a convertible car is on its way on the goods platform of the mountain railway.

Watzdorfer Traditions- und Spezialitätenbrauerei (Watzdorf traditional and speciality brewery)
Beer has been brewed in Watzdorf since 1411, making the Watzdorfer Brewery one of the oldest breweries in Germany. During the brewery tour you will learn a lot about the traditional art of brewing and modern brewing technology. The small, lovingly furnished Brewery Museum gives you an insight into the history of the brewery. If you like, you can smell hops and nibble malt kernels.

Day 3: Drive to the former residence town of Rudolstadt and discover “Schiller’s secret lover” (approx. 39km). Schloss Heidecksburg takes you into the world of rococo. In the afternoon we recommend a visit to the Saalfeld fairy grottos, the most magnificent color show grottos in the world. (approx. 12 km from Rudolstadt).

Rudolstadt
A charming landscape, lively cultural tradition and the work of famous poets and scholars such as Schiller and Goethe, Fichte, Humboldt and Schopenhauer, the musicians Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt and Paganini as well as the pedagogue Friedrich Fröbel are closely connected with the city and its surroundings. Several porcelain manufactories, which are mainly dedicated to the production of decorative porcelain and some of which can be visited, form the industrial focus of the city.
The Heidecksburg castle, visible from afar, towers on the Schlossberg hill above Rudolstadt’s old town. The mighty, three-winged baroque castle was built in the second half of the 18th century. Heidecksburg Castle was the residence of the royal family of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt until 1918. The large ballroom is one of the most beautiful of the German rococo period.

Friedenstein Castle rises on a hill above the town. It is a largely preserved historical monument of the early baroque period in Germany. Big halls and rooms in their original form and design are largely preserved. The early modern castle was named after the important Henneberger Berthold. It is home to a natural history museum and a local history museum. The 38-metre-high main tower from 1597 can be walked on as an observation tower.

At 978m above sea level, it is the second highest mountain in Thuringia and offers a wonderful view of the Thuringian Forest and the Vessertal valley when the weather is fine. Through the observation tower you can even climb up to 1,001m.

Day 2: Today we go to the state capital Erfurt. Not only the unique ensemble of Marien-Dom and Severi-Kirche will impress you, but also the special charm of the historical alleys, the Krämerbrücke and the wonderfully restored city center.
Day 3: Today it’s all about “pure nature”. Go on an interesting trip through the Thuringian Forest, discover the winter sports resort Oberhof (approx. 29 km) and the weapons town Suhl (approx. 16 km). The trip also takes you along the famous Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail.
Day 4: Today we will drive through the wild and romantic Schwarzatal valley to the most colorful show grottos in the world, the fairy grottos in Saalfeld (approx. 48km). The play of colors of the underground stalactite cave world will also enchant you. Afterwards we recommend the continuation to the Hohewartestausee (approx. 18 km) and there a trip with the excursion boat.
Day 5: After breakfast and check-out, we recommend a visit to Eisenach or Weimar, depending on the route. Arnstadt is the ideal starting point to discover Thuringia.
Visit in the state capital e.g. Domplatz with Marien-Dom and Severi-Kirche, Krämerbrücke as the longest built bridge in Europe, Augustinerkloster with Erfurter Schatz, Citadelle Petersberg with a wonderful view of the city, EGA with the horticultural museum.

The city of Suhl has more than a hundred years of tradition in vehicle construction, which is closely connected with the name Simson (in 1896 the company Simson & Co. started with the production of bicycles). On 1100 m² of exhibition space in the vehicle museum Suhl about 220 exhibits from all areas of vehicle construction are shown: Bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles and automobiles. In the museum you will find the Simson motorcycles of the European and world champions as well as the legendary Greifzu racing car.

The construction of the Hohenwarte dam created a unique, fjord-like landscape in the middle of Thuringia. Surrounded by mountains, the dammed Saale meanders through the valley and has created a unique recreation area over the years.
